At Kent Skin & Laser Clinic, our consultant dermatologist-led medical team assesses every patient individually, so you can decide with clear information whether threads are right for you. Based in Canterbury, we welcome patients from across Kent, including Whitstable, Herne Bay, Faversham, Ashford, Folkestone, Dover, Deal and the surrounding areas.
What Are PDO Thread Lifts?
PDO stands for polydioxanone, a dissolvable material that has been used in medical sutures for many years. For a thread lift, very fine threads made from this material are placed beneath the skin, where they are gradually absorbed by the body over time.
Threads can work in two ways:
- Lift and support: certain threads are designed to hold tissue in a slightly higher position, giving a subtle lifting effect.
- Collagen stimulation: as the threads dissolve, the body responds to them, which may encourage new collagen to form and can improve skin firmness and texture over the following weeks and months.
Thread lifts suit people who want a gentle, non-surgical option. The effect is subtle, builds gradually and is not permanent, because the threads dissolve and the skin continues to age naturally. Individual results vary.
Where Can Threads Be Used?
The areas suitable for treatment depend on your anatomy, skin quality and goals, and are agreed at your consultation. Areas commonly discussed for thread treatment include:
- Jawline
- Brows
- Neck
- Eye area
If threads are not the right choice, we will say so and explain the alternatives.

Why Choose Kent Skin & Laser Clinic?
Patients choose us because we provide:
- A consultant dermatologist-led, medical approach to aesthetics
- A full medical assessment before any treatment is recommended
- A personalised plan that fits your face, skin quality and goals
- A CQC-registered clinic in central Canterbury
Threads are only one option. Depending on what we find, we may suggest dermal fillers for volume, skin boosters or polynucleotides for skin quality, neck rejuvenation, or Exilis Radiofrequency Skin Tightening, instead of or alongside threads.
What Happens at the Appointment?
Your appointment begins with a consultation and assessment. During it we will:
- Discuss your concerns and what you would like to change
- Review your medical history, medicines and any previous aesthetic treatments
- Assess your skin, facial structure and the areas you have in mind
- Decide together whether a thread lift is suitable
- Explain the possible effects and how long results may last
- Agree a personalised treatment plan
If you decide to go ahead, an appointment is made with our Dermatologist, and a prescription of 3 days of preventive (prophylactic) antibiotics is given. During the treatment, the area is cleaned and prepared, comfort measures are discussed, and the threads are placed beneath the skin by a trained clinician. Treatment time is 45 to 60 minutes, depending on the area treated.
Some temporary effects are common after treatment, such as bruising, swelling and tenderness. Small dimpling or contour irregularities can also occur, and we will discuss these and other possible effects in detail at your consultation. In general, aftercare involves avoiding firm pressure on the area, strenuous exercise and heat for a period, and contacting us if you are worried; you will be given advice tailored to you. Downtime is typically 3 to 5 days.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a PDO thread lift the same as a facelift?
No. A thread lift is non-surgical and offers a subtle lift. It does not remove skin or change underlying structures as surgery can, so the effect is more modest.
Are PDO thread lift results permanent?
No. The threads dissolve and your skin continues to age, so results are not permanent. How long you notice an effect varies from person to person, and we will discuss realistic expectations at your consultation. Typical duration at our clinic is around 2 years.
Who might not be suitable for threads?
Suitability is decided at consultation. Some people are advised to wait or choose another option, for example if pregnant, if they have an active skin infection in the area, or if they have certain medical conditions.
What are the possible side effects?
Bruising, swelling, tenderness and small areas of dimpling can occur and are usually temporary. Other effects are possible, and we will talk them through at your consultation.
Can I combine threads with other treatments?
Often, when clinically appropriate. We will advise on suitability and the order of treatments at your consultation.
