At Kent Skin & Laser Clinic, our experienced therapist team removes milia using a sterile technique, within a consultant dermatologist-led clinic. Based in Canterbury, we welcome patients from across Kent, including Whitstable, Herne Bay, Faversham, Ashford, Folkestone, Dover, Deal and the surrounding areas.
What Are Milia?
Milia occur when keratin, a protein found in the skin, becomes trapped beneath the surface. This forms a small, firm, pearly bump that sits under an intact layer of skin, which is why it cannot be squeezed out at home. Milia are not the same as blocked pores or whiteheads.
You may have milia if you notice:
- Small, hard white bumps, often around the eyes and cheeks
- A cluster of bumps rather than just one or two
- Bumps that have not responded to squeezing or home remedies
- Bumps that affect your confidence
Milia can appear at any age. Because other skin lumps, such as sebaceous hyperplasia or syringoma, can look similar, it is worth having them checked, and any bump that is growing, bleeding or changing should be seen by a clinician. Our dermatology consultation is available if you are unsure.
Our Approach
Milia removal is a short, focused treatment carried out by our therapist team.
Assessment
Our therapist examines the area first to confirm the bumps are milia rather than another type of spot or cyst. If they are not, we will explain the options, which may include a medical opinion from our dermatology team.
Extraction
Each milium is carefully opened and extracted using a sterile technique. Most patients find the procedure only mildly uncomfortable, and local anaesthetic is not usually needed, although sensitivity varies with the area treated. Individual results vary, and new milia can form over time.
Aftercare and Skin Support
You are given simple aftercare advice to help the skin settle and heal cleanly. If milia keep returning, your therapist may suggest skin treatments such as our medical skin peels or prescription-strength skincare to support the skin surface.
Why Choose Kent Skin & Laser Clinic?
Milia removal is quick, but it still needs to be done carefully and hygienically. Patients choose us because we offer:
- Experienced therapists who work alongside our dermatology team
- A check that the bumps are milia before treatment starts
- A sterile extraction technique
- A medical opinion on site if anything about your skin needs it
- Online booking 24/7, with a skin consultation redeemable against treatment within 3 months
Based in Canterbury, we also welcome patients from Whitstable, Herne Bay, Faversham, Ashford, Folkestone, Dover and Deal.
What Happens at the Appointment?
Your appointment begins with a short assessment. During this, we will:
- Look at the area and confirm the bumps are milia
- Ask about your skin history and any previous treatment
- Explain the procedure and what to expect
- Confirm the number of lesions, which sets the price
Treatment then takes 15 to 30 minutes. It costs £50 for up to 5 lesions in around 15 minutes, or £85 for up to 10 lesions in around 30 minutes.
There may be some mild redness immediately afterwards, and most patients return to normal activities straight away. Most patients have all visible milia cleared in one appointment, so a course of treatment is not usually needed, and a further session can be booked if new ones appear later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I remove milia myself at home?
This is not recommended. Milia sit under an intact layer of skin and cannot be squeezed out like a spot, so attempting removal at home can cause irritation or scarring without clearing them.
Does milia removal hurt?
Most patients find the procedure only mildly uncomfortable, without needing local anaesthetic, though sensitivity varies depending on the area treated. The skin around the eyes can be more sensitive.
Will milia come back after removal?
Milia that have been properly extracted should not return, though new ones can form over time, particularly around the eyes. Further treatment can be booked as needed.
How many treatments will I need?
Most patients have all visible milia cleared in a single appointment, though a further session can be booked if new ones appear later.
Is there any downtime after treatment?
There may be some mild redness immediately afterwards, but most patients return to normal activities straight away. Your therapist will give you aftercare advice.
How do I know if my bumps are milia?
Milia are small, firm, white or pearly bumps that sit just under the skin, often around the eyes and cheeks. Other skin lumps, such as sebaceous hyperplasia or syringoma, can look similar, so our therapist will check first. If a medical assessment is needed, referral to the dermatology team can be made within the clinic. If a bump is changing, bleeding or worrying you, please see a clinician promptly.
