At Kent Skin & Laser Clinic, our consultant dermatologist-led team plans every course around your scarring pattern and skin type. Based in Canterbury, we welcome patients from across Kent, including Whitstable, Herne Bay, Faversham, Ashford, Folkestone, Dover, Deal and the surrounding areas.
What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Fractional laser resurfacing works by creating controlled micro injuries in the skin. These stimulate the body’s natural healing response, which produces fresh collagen and helps to smooth the surface of the skin over time.
It may be a suitable option if you have:
- Acne scarring that affects your skin's texture
- Uneven or pitted skin from previous breakouts
- A preference for a gradual, natural-looking improvement rather than a single dramatic change
- Time to allow for a short recovery period after each session
Not every skin type or scar is suitable for laser treatment, so a consultation comes first. If your scarring is linked to active acne, our acne treatment page explains the options that can help control breakouts alongside resurfacing.
Our Approach to Laser Skin Resurfacing
Assessment and Planning
We begin by assessing your scarring or texture concern, the areas involved and your skin type. A treatment plan is then agreed with you, so you know what to expect before any laser is used.
Fractional Laser Treatment
The laser is applied to the treatment area in a fractional pattern, treating small columns of skin while leaving the tissue between them untouched. This supports faster healing and stimulates collagen production. Topical numbing cream is applied beforehand to help with comfort.
A Course of Sessions
Most patients need 4 to 6 sessions spaced around 6 weeks apart. This gives the skin time to heal and rebuild collagen between treatments. Improvement often continues for several months after your final session as new collagen forms. Individual results vary.
Supporting Treatments
Depending on your skin, we may suggest other options alongside resurfacing, such as medical skin peels or micro-needling, to support overall skin texture.

What Happens at the Appointment?
Your first visit is a consultation, during which we will:
- Assess your scarring or texture concern
- Review your medical history and skin type
- Carry out a patch test
- Agree a treatment plan based on the areas involved
During treatment, the laser is passed over the area in a fractional pattern. Most people describe a warm or slightly uncomfortable sensation, which is eased by the numbing cream.
Afterwards, expect some redness and sensitivity for a few days, similar to mild sunburn, before the skin settles. Your therapist will explain how to care for your skin while it heals, including sun protection.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many laser resurfacing sessions will I need?
Most patients need 4 to 6 sessions, spaced around 6 weeks apart. The exact number depends on the type and depth of your scarring, and we will give you a realistic plan at your consultation.
Is laser skin resurfacing sore?
Most patients tolerate treatment well. Topical numbing cream is applied beforehand, and the sensation is usually described as warm or slightly uncomfortable. Your skin may feel sensitive for a short time afterwards.
What is the downtime after laser resurfacing?
You can expect redness and sensitivity for a few days after each session, similar to mild sunburn, before the skin settles back to normal. We will explain how to look after your skin during this time.
Will laser resurfacing remove my acne scars completely?
Results depend on the type and depth of scarring. Many patients see a noticeable improvement in texture and appearance, but scars are not usually removed completely. Individual results vary, and we will discuss realistic expectations with you first.
When will I see results?
Improvement builds gradually over the course of your sessions. New collagen continues to form after treatment, so further improvement is often seen for several months after your final session.
How much does laser skin resurfacing cost?
Treatment starts from £350 for a small area. The total cost depends on the size of the area and the number of sessions, so we will confirm this at your consultation.
