Our consultant dermatologist-led team carries out mole removal at our CQC-registered clinic, with removed tissue sent for histology as standard. Based in Canterbury, we welcome patients from across Kent, including Whitstable, Herne Bay, Faversham, Ashford, Folkestone, Dover, Deal and the surrounding areas.
What is Mole Removal?
Mole removal is a minor procedure to take away a mole, usually under local anaesthetic. People choose it for many reasons, including:
- A mole that catches on clothing, rubs or is irritated by shaving
- A mole you would prefer removed for cosmetic reasons
- A mole that a clinician has advised should be removed and tested
- Reassurance, because you would simply like it assessed by a specialist
If you notice a mole that has changed in size, shape or colour, or that is bleeding, please arrange to see a clinician promptly rather than waiting. Our mole check service is a good first step, and you can read about the wider assessment of suspicious lesions on our skin cancer treatment page.
Treatment Options for Mole Removal
Once your mole has been assessed, we recommend the technique that suits its type, depth and location.
Surgical Mole Removal
The mole is removed by excision under local anaesthetic, with careful closure to keep scarring to a minimum. This approach is suitable for raised, deep or atypical moles, and allows the whole lesion to be sent for analysis.
Shave Removal
For some raised benign moles, shave removal can be a suitable option and may avoid the need for stitches. It is a short procedure that is carried out under local anaesthetic, and your clinician will explain whether it is appropriate for your mole.
Laser Treatment for Selected Lesions
In carefully selected cases, flat benign pigmented lesions such as lentigines (sun spots) can be treated with a medical-grade laser. Accurate diagnosis always comes first, so only clinically suitable lesions are treated. Individual results vary.

What Happens at the Appointment?
Your appointment begins with an assessment. During the consultation, we will:
- Examine the mole, using dermoscopy where helpful
- Review your medical history and any concerns
- Discuss the removal options and what to expect
- Agree the most suitable technique for you
The mole is then removed under local anaesthetic, usually in a single short visit. You may feel a brief pinch as the anaesthetic is given, but the area is numb during the procedure. Removed tissue is sent for histological analysis, and we contact you with the results and any aftercare advice. Most patients return to normal activities the same day, although some mild soreness for a day or two is common.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will mole removal leave a scar?
There will be a small mark at the removal site, which usually fades considerably over several months. Your clinician will discuss the likely appearance and position of the scar with you before treatment. Following your aftercare advice helps the area heal as well as possible, and individual results vary.
Does mole removal hurt?
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic first, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some mild soreness for a day or two afterwards is normal.
Is the mole tested after removal?
Yes. Histology is included as standard for every mole removal at Kent Skin & Laser Clinic, so you receive a laboratory result rather than only a visual assessment.
How long does mole removal take?
Most appointments take 30 to 45 minutes, including your consultation, the procedure itself and aftercare advice.
Can I have more than one mole removed at the same appointment?
Often, yes. Our consultant dermatologist will assess all the moles you are concerned about and advise which can reasonably be removed in the same visit.
Should I have a mole checked before deciding on removal?
Yes. Any mole that has changed or that you are unsure about should be assessed by a clinician before it is removed. A mole check or mole mapping appointment can help, and our team will advise which is right for you.
