What is a Mole & Lesion Assessment?
A mole and lesion assessment is a specialist examination of any mole, lump or mark on your skin. Your skin is examined closely, using dermoscopy where it helps, and you are advised of the diagnosis or treatment plan at the same appointment.
It covers a wide range of concerns, not just moles:
- Skin cancers and precancerous changes
- Benign lumps and bumps such as cysts or lipomas
- Scarring, including keloid or hypertrophic scars
- Skin-coloured or pigmented marks of any kind
Because so many different things can present as a lump or a mark, an accurate diagnosis first means you are never treated for the wrong thing. Any mole that is changing, or any mark that is not healing, should be seen by a clinician promptly, so please mention it when you book.
What Can We Assess and Treat?
Moles and Pigmented Marks
Your Consultant Dermatologist examines individual moles and pigmented lesions with dermoscopy and advises whether monitoring, mapping or removal is the right next step. For a head to toe examination, see our mole check appointment.
Lumps and Bumps
Many lumps are benign, such as cysts or lipomas, but the only way to be sure is to have them examined. Some lumps are better assessed with an ultrasound scan first, and our team will explain if that applies to you. Where treatment is wanted, we offer cyst removal here in the clinic.
Skin Cancer and Precancerous Changes
If your assessment suggests a skin cancer or precancerous change, our team will explain the next steps clearly. Where a lesion needs a definitive diagnosis, this may mean removal and histology, with our skin cancer treatment service arranged promptly.
Scars and Skin Growths
Scars, including keloid or hypertrophic scars, and small growths such as skin tags can also be assessed, so you know exactly what you are dealing with before choosing any treatment.

- CQC-regulated care, with all major private medical insurers accepted
We welcome patients from Canterbury and across Kent.
What Happens at the Appointment?
Your appointment begins with a consultation, during which our team will:
- Discuss your concern and how long you have noticed it
- Ask about your skin history
- Ask about any family history of skin conditions where relevant
- Explain what the examination involves
Your skin is then examined closely, using dermoscopy for individual moles or lesions where this helps confirm the diagnosis. The examination is non-invasive, takes 15 to 30 minutes and has minimal downtime.
You will be given clear advice on whether monitoring, further imaging or treatment is the right next step. If something needs treating, whether that is mole removal, a cyst or a lesion needing surgery, this is either arranged at the same visit where appropriate or booked as a prompt follow-up. Individual outcomes vary.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between this and a mole check?
A mole and lesion assessment is broader than a mole check alone. It covers any skin concern, including moles, lumps, cysts, scarring or marks, rather than focusing specifically on mole surveillance, though it can include that if it is your main concern.
Will I need any tests as well as an examination?
Sometimes. If a lesion needs a definitive diagnosis, this may mean removal and histology, and some lumps are better assessed with an ultrasound scan first. Your Consultant Dermatologist will explain if either applies to you.
How quickly can I be seen?
Kent Skin & Laser Clinic offers a rapid access pathway for anything urgent, such as a changing mole or suspected skin cancer, so you are not left waiting to be seen.
Do I need a GP referral?
No, you can book directly as a self-funded patient. Some private medical insurers may require a referral, so it is worth checking your policy first.
What happens if something needs treating?
If your assessment identifies something needing treatment, whether that is mole removal, a cyst or a lesion needing surgery, this is either arranged at the same visit where appropriate or booked as a prompt follow-up appointment.
