At Kent Skin & Laser Clinic, our consultant dermatologist-led team carries out mole mapping in a calm, CQC-registered clinic. Based in Canterbury, we welcome patients from across Kent, including Whitstable, Herne Bay, Faversham, Ashford, Folkestone, Dover, Deal and the surrounding areas.
What is Mole Mapping?
Mole mapping is a structured check of the skin from head to toe, combined with photographs that record the size, shape and colour of your moles. At later appointments, your clinician can compare what they see with your baseline images rather than relying on memory.
It can be particularly helpful if you:
- Have a large number of moles, which makes individual monitoring difficult
- Have had melanoma or another skin cancer in the past
- Have a family history of melanoma
- Have been advised to keep an eye on a specific mole
- Would like the reassurance of a photographic record
Mole mapping is a monitoring tool. It does not replace checking your own skin between appointments, and any mole that changes or worries you should be seen by a clinician promptly. You can read about our simpler examination on our mole check page.
Our Approach to Mole Mapping
Every mole mapping appointment is built around a careful clinical examination, with photography added to support long-term follow up.
Full Body Skin Examination
Our consultant dermatologist examines your skin from head to toe, using dermoscopy where helpful, and identifies any moles that deserve particular attention. Your medical history and any family history are taken into account.
Photographic Mapping
Clinical photographs record the appearance of your moles, creating a baseline for future comparison. Your images are stored securely as part of your medical record, in line with our data protection obligations, and used only to support your care.
Review and Next Steps
You will be advised on a suitable interval for your next appointment. Any mole needing more immediate attention is discussed with you, and where appropriate we can arrange assessment or removal with histology, as described on our mole removal page.
Why Choose Kent Skin & Laser Clinic?

- Consultant-led assessment of moles and skin lesions
- Minor surgery in the clinic under local anaesthetic, if a mole needs removing
- Histology included as standard when tissue is removed
- A CQC-registered clinic that accepts all major private medical insurers
- Clear explanations and a follow up interval tailored to you
We welcome patients from Canterbury, Whitstable, Herne Bay, Faversham, Ashford, Folkestone, Dover and Deal.
What Happens at the Appointment?
Your appointment begins with a conversation about your skin history, your moles and any concerns. During the appointment, we will:
- Ask about previous skin cancers, sun exposure and family history
- Examine your skin from head to toe
- Photograph your moles to create a baseline record
- Discuss any mole that needs closer attention
- Recommend when to return for your next mapping appointment
The appointment takes around 45 minutes and is comfortable, with no needles or downtime. You can return to normal activities straight away. Many patients return every 6 to 12 months, although your consultant dermatologist will advise an interval based on your own skin.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I repeat mole mapping?
This depends on your individual circumstances. Many patients return every 6 to 12 months, but your consultant dermatologist will recommend an interval based on your skin history, the number of moles you have and any family history.
Is mole mapping the same as a mole check?
A mole check is a thorough examination on the day. Mole mapping adds photographic documentation, so that future changes can be compared with a clear baseline. Your clinician can advise which is more suitable for you.
Can mole mapping tell me if a mole is cancerous?
Mole mapping helps to show change over time, which is an important thing to monitor. It is not a diagnosis in itself. Any mole with features that concern our team will be discussed with you and, where appropriate, removed and sent for histology.
Are the photographs stored securely?
Yes. Your images are kept securely as part of your medical record, in line with our data protection obligations, and are used only to support your ongoing care.
Can mole mapping replace checking my skin at home?
No. Mole mapping is a useful addition to, not a replacement for, checking your own skin between appointments. We can advise you on what to look out for, and you should arrange to see a clinician about any mole that changes.
Do I need a GP referral for mole mapping?
You can book a private appointment with us directly. Consultant Dermatologist appointments are booked by phone or email so that we can check whether you are insured or self-funding, and some insurers may have their own referral requirements.

Excellent experience in every way. So glad I found this place. The treatment by Charlotte was exceptional. Update. Second visit was just as good as the first.
