At Kent Skin & Laser Clinic, our consultant dermatologist-led team carries out mole checks using dermoscopy. Based in Canterbury, we welcome patients from across Kent, including Whitstable, Herne Bay, Faversham, Ashford, Folkestone, Dover, Deal and the surrounding areas.
What is a Mole Check?
A mole check is a professional skin examination carried out by one of our Consultant Dermatologists. Rather than looking only at the mole that worries you, the whole of your skin is examined, so that anything that needs a closer look is picked up.
A mole check may be right for you if:
- You have a large number of moles or freckles
- You have a family history of melanoma or skin cancer
- You have noticed a mole that looks different from the others
- You would like a baseline assessment before monitoring your skin over time
- You spend a lot of time in the sun, or have done so in the past
If you have noticed a mole that is changing, please do not wait for a routine check. Book an appointment or see a clinician promptly, and mention the change when you book so it can be assessed first.
What Our Mole Check Includes
Full Body Examination
Your skin is examined from head to toe, including areas that are hard to see yourself. This covers your entire skin, not just the moles you are already concerned about.
Dermoscopy
A dermatoscope is a handheld magnifying instrument that allows our Consultant Dermatologist to look closely at the structure of individual moles. It helps distinguish moles that can simply be left alone from those that need monitoring, mapping or removal.
Mole Mapping and Removal Where Needed
A mole check is a thorough visual and dermoscopic examination on the day. If you would like to track changes over time, our mole mapping service uses photography to create a baseline record. If a mole needs to be removed, our mole removal service is carried out here at the clinic.
Why Choose Kent Skin & Laser Clinic?
Dermatology is the heart of our clinic, with expertise rooted in Canterbury since 2002. Patients choose us because we offer:
- Consultant-led dermatology, with moles, lesions and skin cancer concerns assessed by our Consultant Dermatologists
- Minor surgery here in the clinic under local anaesthetic, so you can go home the same day
- Histology included as standard when tissue is removed, with the cost included in your price
- CQC-regulated care, with all major private medical insurers accepted
We welcome patients from Canterbury and across Kent.
What Happens at the Appointment?
Your appointment begins with a consultation, during which our team will:
- Discuss your skin history and sun exposure
- Ask about any family history of skin cancer
- Talk through any moles that concern you
- Explain what the examination involves
Our Consultant Dermatologist then examines your skin from head to toe, using dermoscopy to look closely at individual moles. The examination is non-invasive and takes around 30 minutes, with minimal downtime.
You are told the outcome straight away, along with clear advice on any mole that needs monitoring, mapping or removal. If a mole shows any concerning features, we will discuss the options with you at the same appointment. Individual outcomes vary, as every skin is different.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is a mole check different from a mole mapping appointment?
A mole check is a thorough visual and dermoscopic examination on the day. Mole mapping goes a step further, using photography to create a baseline record so future changes can be tracked over time.
How often should I have a mole check?
This depends on your individual risk factors. Your Consultant Dermatologist can advise how often to return, based on your skin type, mole count and family history.
Will every mole be examined?
Yes. A full body mole check at Kent Skin & Laser Clinic covers your entire skin, not just the moles you are already concerned about.
What happens if a mole needs a closer look?
If a mole shows any features that need a closer look, we will discuss the options with you at the same appointment. This may include mole mapping or removal, both carried out here at the clinic.
Do I need a GP referral for a mole check?
No. You can book a mole check directly with Kent Skin & Laser Clinic as a self-funded appointment. Some private medical insurers may require a referral, so it is worth checking your policy.
What should I do if a mole changes?
Any mole that changes in size, shape or colour, or that itches, bleeds or crusts, should be seen by a clinician promptly. Please do not wait for a routine check.
