About the Condition
Tattoo ink sits deep in the skin, where the body cannot easily remove it. A Q-switched laser delivers energy in very short pulses that break the ink into tiny particles, which the body then clears gradually.
Common features include:
- A tattoo you would like to fade or remove completely
- A tattoo you would like lightened before a cover-up design
- An older or amateur tattoo that has faded or blurred
- A tattoo you want removed for work or personal reasons
- A wish for a medically supervised approach
The number of sessions depends on the size, colour and age of the tattoo and on your skin type. Some ink colours respond more slowly than others, and older tattoos may respond differently from newer ones. We will give you a realistic estimate at your consultation.
How We Treat It
Treatment starts with an assessment of your tattoo and a patch test to confirm that laser is suitable for your skin.
Sessions are usually spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart so the skin can heal and the body can clear treated ink. Expect some superficial scabbing and crusting for up to 10 days after each session. Many tattoos can be significantly faded or fully removed over a course, though individual results vary.
When to See a Specialist
It is worth having a tattoo assessed before treatment if it was applied recently, if the skin around it is irritated, or if you have a skin condition in the area.
Please have any mole or pigmented lesion within or beside a tattoo checked before treatment. If you notice changes in the skin around a tattoo, such as a mark that is growing, bleeding or changing colour, book a consultation promptly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a tattoo be removed completely?
Many tattoos can be significantly faded or fully removed over a course, but results vary with the ink, size, age and your skin type. We will give you a realistic view at your consultation.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on the size, colour and age of the tattoo. A course of several sessions is usual, with sessions 6 to 8 weeks apart.
Does laser tattoo removal hurt?
Most people describe a snapping or stinging sensation. Cooling is used throughout to improve comfort.
Will laser tattoo removal leave a mark?
The skin may scab or crust for up to 10 days and can be pink for a while afterwards. Your therapist will give you aftercare advice, and the risk of marks is discussed before treatment.
Can I have a cover-up over a partly removed tattoo?
Yes, fading a tattoo with laser can make way for a cover-up design. Speak to your tattoo artist about timing.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly with us, online or by phone.

“I am currently having 2 tattoos removed by them and am really pleased with the progress. As always a friendly and professional service. I have just had my latest session today and was astonished with new laser tattoo removal machine now being used. The session took a fraction of the time and I found it less uncomfortable too.”
