About the Condition
Grinding and clenching, known as bruxism, involve overactive jaw muscles, particularly the masseters at the sides of the jaw. It often happens during sleep and is linked to stress, anxiety, poor sleep and some medications.
Common features include:
- Jaw ache or tightness, especially in the morning
- Tension headaches around the temples
- Worn, chipped or sensitive teeth
- A clicking or sore jaw joint
- A square or prominent jaw caused by enlarged jaw muscles
A dentist can check for tooth wear and advise on a night guard, and addressing stress and sleep habits can help. Botulinum toxin treats the muscle overactivity itself, and it is often used alongside dental advice.
How We Treat It
Botulinum toxin is injected into the masseter muscles to reduce their strength and activity, which may ease jaw tension and discomfort. A side effect for some people is a softer, slimmer jaw line.
Treatment takes around 30 minutes, with minimal downtime. Effects build over a couple of weeks and typically last around three to four months, and individual results vary.
