At our CQC-registered dermatology clinic, our consultant dermatologist-led team assesses pigmentation carefully before recommending a plan. Patients travel to us from across Kent, including Canterbury, Whitstable, Herne Bay, Faversham, Ashford, Maidstone and Thanet, for specialist assessment and a treatment plan matched to the cause of their pigmentation.
About the Condition
Hyperpigmentation happens when the skin produces more pigment (melanin) in certain areas. It is not one condition but a description of a change in colour, and the cause determines the right treatment.
Common features include:
- Patches of skin darker than the surrounding area
- Marks left behind after acne, injury or inflammation
- Sun-related spots on exposed areas such as the face and hands
- Symmetrical facial patches, which may be melasma
- Gradual darkening with continued sun exposure
Common causes include sun exposure, hormonal changes, and inflammation following acne or skin injury. Some people are more prone to pigmentation because of their skin type, and sunlight can darken existing patches and make them more noticeable. Pigmentation is usually harmless, but it can affect confidence, and many people would like it to look more even.
Because pigment changes can look similar, an accurate diagnosis from a dermatology specialist is important. Some patches suit laser or IPL, others with peels and skincare, and melasma needs a more cautious approach because certain treatments can make it worse. Any new or changing dark mark should also be looked at by a clinician, as it is not always simple pigmentation (our mole mapping service and pigmented lesions assessment are available if you are unsure).
How We Treat It
Your journey starts with a dermatology consultation, where we look at your skin, ask about sun exposure, medications, hormones and previous treatments, and confirm the likely cause. We then discuss the options that suit your skin type and goals.
Sun-related pigmentation and age spots often respond well to medical laser or IPL treatment, delivered under the oversight of Dr Mark Hudson-Peacock, Consultant Dermatologist and the clinic’s Laser Protection Supervisor. A consultation and patch test come first, so settings are matched to your skin. Post-inflammatory marks from acne may improve with a combination of skincare, peels and time. Where melasma is suspected, we take a more cautious, tailored approach, and you may wish to read our page on melasma.
Whatever the cause, daily sun protection and a suitable home routine are central to keeping results. Individual results vary, and pigmentation can return if the underlying trigger continues.
When to See a Specialist
It is worth having patchy or uneven pigmentation properly assessed rather than assuming it will respond to a general pigmentation treatment or an over-the-counter product. The wrong product or treatment can sometimes make pigmentation worse.
Consider booking a consultation if pigmentation is spreading, is not fading, is affecting your confidence, or if you are unsure of the cause.
Please seek prompt medical advice if a dark patch is new, has changed in size, shape or colour, has an irregular edge, itches, bleeds or crusts. These changes are not usually a sign of anything serious, but they should always be checked.

Frequently Asked Questions
What causes hyperpigmentation?
Common causes include sun exposure, hormonal changes, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation following acne or injury, and conditions such as melasma. The right treatment depends on identifying the underlying cause.
Is all hyperpigmentation treated the same way?
No. Sun-related pigmentation often responds to laser or IPL, while melasma and post-acne marks need a different, more tailored approach.
How long does hyperpigmentation take to fade?
This depends on the cause and the treatment used. Some sun-related pigmentation can improve within a few sessions, while other types may take longer and need consistent skincare alongside treatment. Your consultant dermatologist-led team will talk you through what to expect.
Can hyperpigmentation come back after treatment?
Yes, particularly if the underlying cause, such as sun exposure or hormonal change, continues. Good sun protection and ongoing skincare help maintain results.
Should I see a dermatologist before trying pigmentation products at home?
We recommend it. Using the wrong product or treatment for your type of pigmentation can sometimes make it worse rather than better.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly with us.
