About the Condition
Acne scars form when inflamed spots damage the skin’s deeper layers and the repair process leaves a change in texture. Different types of scar need different approaches, so identifying the type is an important first step.
Common features include:
- Shallow or deep pitted scars, sometimes called ice-pick or boxcar scars
- Rolling, uneven texture across the cheeks
- Raised or thickened scars, more common on the chest, back and jawline
- Red or brown marks that remain after spots have healed
- Uneven skin texture and enlarged-looking pores
Marks that are red or brown, rather than pitted, are often post-inflammatory changes that fade over time. Active acne should be treated first, because new breakouts can cause further scarring.
How We Treat It
Treatment depends on the type of scar and whether acne is still active. The first step is a medical dermatology assessment, so we can treat any ongoing acne and plan scar treatment around it.
Fractional laser resurfacing and microneedling stimulate collagen to soften pitted and uneven scars over a course of sessions, and medical skin peels can help with marks and tone. Results build gradually, and individual results vary.
When to See a Specialist
A consultation is worthwhile if acne has left marks or scars that bother you, or if acne is still active and you are worried about scarring.
Please book promptly if your acne is severe, painful or leaving scars quickly, as early treatment helps to reduce the risk of permanent scarring. Raised or thickened scars should also be assessed by our dermatology team.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can acne scars be removed completely?
Treatment can improve the look of acne scars, often noticeably, but complete removal is not always possible. We will give you a realistic view at your consultation.
Which treatment is best for acne scars?
This depends on the type of scar. Laser resurfacing and microneedling are commonly used for pitted scars, and peels for marks and tone. Your clinician will advise.
How many sessions will I need?
Most scar treatments need a course of sessions, with results building over several months. We will explain the likely number at your consultation.
Should I treat my acne first?
Yes, active acne should be under control before scar treatment, which is why we start with a medical assessment.
Is there any downtime?
This varies by treatment. Microneedling usually involves a short period of redness, and laser resurfacing a few days of redness and sensitivity.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly with us, online or by phone.
