At Kent Skin & Laser Clinic, our consultant dermatologist-led team offers a choice of removal methods, depending on the size and number of your skin tags. Based in Canterbury, we welcome patients from across Kent, including Whitstable, Herne Bay, Faversham, Ashford, Folkestone, Dover, Deal and the surrounding areas.
What are Skin Tags?
Skin tags are benign growths that often develop where skin rubs against skin or clothing. They are very common, and may be more likely as we get older. You may want yours removed if:
- They catch on clothing, jewellery or during shaving
- They are in a visible place and affect your confidence
- You have several that could be treated in one session
- A larger tag is uncomfortable or gets in the way
Because other skin growths can look similar to skin tags, we recommend an assessment before treatment. Anything that is changing, bleeding or that you are unsure about should be checked by a clinician. You can read more on our skin tags page.
Skin Tag Removal Options
We recommend the method that best suits the size, number and location of your skin tags.
Electrolysis
Electrolysis uses a small electrical current and is well suited to smaller skin tags. It is carried out by our therapist team, and is generally well tolerated without anaesthetic. Our electrolysis page has more about this technique.
Snip Cautery
Snip cautery is carried out by our doctor and is better suited to larger skin tags. The tag is removed quickly and precisely, and the area is sealed. Local anaesthetic is used where needed for larger tags, so you should not feel pain during the procedure.
How Many Can Be Treated?
The number of skin tags we can treat in one session depends on their size and location. Our price list is tiered by number of lesions, and our team will advise you at your appointment what can reasonably be done in one visit.
Why Choose Kent Skin & Laser Clinic?
Dermatology is the heart of our clinic, with expertise rooted in Canterbury since 2002. Patients choose us because we provide:
- A consultant dermatologist-led team
- A choice between therapist-led electrolysis and doctor-led snip cautery
- Minor surgery available here in the clinic under local anaesthetic
- A CQC-registered clinic that accepts all major private medical insurers
- Clear advice on which method suits your skin tags
We welcome patients from Canterbury, Whitstable, Herne Bay, Faversham, Ashford, Folkestone, Dover and Deal.
What Happens at the Appointment?
Your appointment begins with a short assessment. During the consultation, we will:
- Look at the size, number and location of your skin tags
- Check that they are suitable for removal
- Recommend the most suitable method
- Explain what to expect and answer your questions
Smaller tags are treated with electrolysis, while larger tags are removed with snip cautery, with local anaesthetic if needed. Sessions take around 30 minutes. You will be given simple aftercare advice, and most people return to normal activities straight away. Treated areas may look slightly red at first, and a small mark can occasionally remain where a larger tag was removed. Individual results vary.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between electrolysis and snip cautery?
Electrolysis uses a small electrical current and is well suited to smaller skin tags, carried out by our therapist team. Snip cautery is performed by our doctor and is better suited to larger tags, using a quick, precise removal technique.
Does skin tag removal hurt?
Electrolysis is generally well tolerated without anaesthetic. Snip cautery may involve local anaesthetic for larger tags, so you should not feel pain during the procedure itself.
Will skin tags come back after removal?
A treated skin tag is removed, but it is common to develop new ones over time, particularly in the same general areas such as the neck or underarms.
How many skin tags can be treated in one session?
This depends on their size and number. Our price list is tiered for 1 to 5 and 6 to 10 lesions, and our team will advise how many can reasonably be treated at your appointment.
Is there any scarring after treatment?
Both methods are designed to minimise scarring, though snip cautery on a larger tag may leave a very small mark that fades over time.
How much does skin tag removal cost?
Electrolysis with our therapist is £50 for 1 to 5 lesions and £85 for 6 to 10 lesions. Snip cautery with our doctor is £260 for 1 to 5 lesions and £300 for 6 to 10 lesions.
